Darthy

Eating was Darthy’s favourite pastime…

This is our beautiful dog Darthy; a cross Shar-pei Mastiff. My family have been terrified by the rough treatment metered out by Domestic animal Services (DAS). Since his incarceration August 2017, which in and of itself is cruel (9 months in a small cell) my family has had no communication between DAS and ourselves. This has led to incorrect filing of information which led to Darthy’s incarceration. We have been bullied into submission and the stress my family has endured is terrifying. It is hard to state the events that led to this but I will try to explain our predicament. Carl was our son’s mentor from a men’s group. He was a soldier that had time in Afghanistan. On this one occasion where he and our son went out for a bite to eat and on returning wanted to discuss some matters with my wife. Darthy pushed past the door and ran outside. This is where it gets contentious. Real dog lovers have a deep connection to their dogs. They are treated like family. Unlike some owners who whilst loving their dogs have a less mutual love and more towards having their dogs be like ornaments. No judgement. We treat Darthy as our family. Taking him away is akin to taking away one’s child. DAS don’t seem to get that, or if they do, they don’t seem to care.

Play time

This partition is for those dog lovers that are like us. Passionate and caring. Darthy was taught by me to jump. I figured it would strengthen his back legs. DAS considers jumping to be unsafe. I get that. Darthy has never been trained. We were in the process of finding a trainer when this incident happened. Darthy is a strong dog that needs training. A week before the incident, my intuition told me to get Darthy to another house. This was ignored. I was frustrated to say the least. Both my son and my wife only saw a bruise on Carl’s arm and not the claims he made. To this date no one has any pictures or anything that shows. My family take full responsibility for this. We are more at fault than Darthy is.

At this stage I started to research trainers and what they had to say. Most excellent trainers taught how to overcome a dog that wanted to do as he pleased. That is fair enough. If you don’t train your dog, he wont know what to do and misbehaves. That is what all dog’s do. When a dog hasn’t been trained to do what the owners want, guess what…they will do what they think is ok to do. Punishment for bad behaviour isn’t punishing the dog but the behaviour. Correcting behaviour is an easy task. With patience and time this is easily achieved with any kind of dog. Distracting bad behaviour simply means diverting the dogs attention towards a more positive one. Darthy liked to do what he wanted. That didn’t bode well with us. We had no experience in dog training and the importance of it whatsoever. For Darthy to be punished and for DAS not to see good possibilities (training) is a shame.
